The First Year and the Evil Senior: พี่ว้ากตัวร้ายกับนายปีหนึ่ง

SOTUS, Rule 26: Let the senior be the one to decide

Arthit looked at himself in the mirror in black pants and white shirt, just like he wore to school. Except for a long, thin red tie, which made him look a little different. This was because his outfit had to match the theme of the invitation card for the wedding he was going to attend to senior Tum and Fon.

They’re both seniors he admires and have taken care of him throughout his university studies, so he should be happy for such a happy occasion but looking at himself in the mirror, he’s not in the mood for a wedding…

Friday, he took an exam.

Saturday, he was busy looking for wedding dress clothes but he didn’t have any red dress in his wardrobe. Finally he only found a red tie but at least it was better than not wearing anything at all. All that was left for him to do was to do his best to look presentable. For a while now, he had been suffering from too many problems, not only big dark circles under his face but also physical exhaustion. He needed to hide it all, to look good.

Especially the biggest one, which not only disturbed his mind but also weighed on his heart like a stone and made him feel very heavy dinging the phone to break the silence. Someone absent-minded was startled. He hurriedly picked up the phone and pressed the answer button, hearing

Nott said: “Ready? I’m waiting for you downstairs in your dormitory.”

Arthit said: “Okay, I’ll be right down.”

Arthit replied briefly and hung up the phone. He sighed and let his tiredness out…today was a good day anyway. Arthit put on a black blazer and checked his appearance in front of the mirror. Before he left, he remembered to take an important congratulatory gift with him. He locked the door, walked downstairs and saw Nott’s black bus waiting in front of the building. The windscreen was down. His friends inside make jokes about him.

Prem said: “Just down here, Mr. Arthit. Dressed so handsomely I thought some Korean star had come….”

Arthit said: “I’m Korean. And you are?”

Prem was wearing a red tang suit, like a Chinese uncle selling beef soup. Arthit ridiculed the guy in the car. The people going to the wedding in the car are his hazing team friends, because they have been trained by senior Tum. Although Prem was in another code line, he was close to his friends and used to go out and get drunk with senior Tum when code 0206 went out. He had also been given the task of helping with the wedding photos, so he needed to find a red dress to wear. Prem was mumbling and making excuses about the dress and said: “I didn’t have time to find a dress, I bought it on Chinese New Year.”

Arthit frowned, looking at Prem’s typical Thai face, he didn’t think he was a Thai-Chinese mix. He tried to reply but was interrupted by someone sitting in the back of the car.

Nott said: “Come on, have you been standing there talking for too long? Come on, Arthit, we’re late.”

Nott was the one who ended the conversation. Arthit opened the door and sat in the empty passenger seat. The car set off, driving along the road in the dusk. Shortly afterwards, the car stopped near the luxury hotel near the Rama VIII Bridge and the Chao Phraya River.

It was just as the sun was setting. The venue was beautifully decorated with a theme of red roses, which not only matched the auspicious colors but also suited the bride and groom who were studying at the Faculty of Engineering. Because when you look at the origin of the wedding guests, you will find a lot of familiar people. Most of them are seniors who graduated with the bride and groom and some of them are pairs of students. It’s almost like a young people’s party, where the bride and groom stand in front of the archway of the wedding venue and greet the guests with a smile.

Arthit arrived and saluted them.

Arthit said: “Phii Tum, Phii Fon, Happy wedding.”

The groom looked even more stylish than usual in his white dress and red bow tie. The bride, who was usually a beautiful bride, was even more radiant and surprised. However, they were the same as before, senior Tum and Fon of the younger siblings. When the groom saw the congratulations, he smiled and shouted out to them to come and take a picture.

Tum said: “Hi, Ooun… Ooun and your friends too, come and take a picture with me and tell them to come and stand in front of the camera with a group of training officers, Prem will be in charge of the shutter and take a lot of pictures until we hear another group of guests come and say hello.”

Pleng/ Noomnim said: “Phii Tum and Fon, how are you?”

Fon said: “Wow, my code lines are here,” the bride shouted happily and quickly left the archway, heading for her  code line juniors. At the front were Pleng and Noomnim in their beautiful dresses, followed by senior Pak and senior Tat and finally Lin and Kong. In keeping with the theme of the wedding, Kong wore a black suit on the outside, a red shirt on the inside and a black tie to make him look more gentlemanly. Although his overall appearance resembled that of Arthit and many others at the wedding, he was still very handsome and befitted the title of Mr. Campus.

The ladies there looked at him from time to time, no exceptions, even the bride was amazed. She hurried the new arrivals to stand in front of the arch.

Fon said: “Nong Kongphop, come and take a photo with Miss Fon…Tum you go and stand a bit further away? I’d like to take a picture with my code line nongs first. The groom, like a pathetic puppy being banished, had to stand around and watch the youngster take a picture with his bride, while a group of training officers joked happily at his expense.

Prem took a lot of pictures without realizing it. It wasn’t until the last picture was taken that the groom was called back for the group photo. Then, the groom made a suggestion to Tum and said: “By the way, for those of you who haven’t taken a picture with another student, 0062 or 0206. Let’s take a picture together.”

Phii Tum instructed his own codeline and code line 0062 to stand in front of the arch.  Arthit had to go and join them. But since there were nearly 10 people in the group, the photographer had to find a way to get everyone into the frame of the camera.

Prem said: “Everyone get closer. Arthit moved step by step to the side and then felt a faint smell of perfume coming from his left side. He turned his head to look without thinking. He froze almost immediately when he saw Kong standing next to him. Kong also seemed to realize that the person standing next to him was Arthit and also froze for a moment.

To avoid looking directly at the person next to him, Kong’s eyes quickly and indifferently looked away. That’s when they heard the cameraman’s voice.

Prem said: “Ready, group smile. Three…two… One.”

Arthit tried his best to smile towards the camera lens. Although he had been photographed many times, for some reason, his smile seemed strange. There was only a happy expression on his face but inside his heart it was the opposite. Because those old feelings, which he tried to forget, reappeared again…the same feelings that he tried to forget. Although the other person was standing right beside him, he felt far away from him.

Prem said: “OK,” well as soon as the group photo was over, everyone dispersed. The smell of perfume was fading.

Kong turned to leave, leaving Arthit feeling empty and alone inside. He couldn’t help it…

Before Arthit realizes it, he reaches out and grabs someone by the suit to stop him. When he regains consciousness, he immediately lets go. However, it seems too late and the person who was shouted at turned around and replied in surprise.

Kongpop said: “Hmm.”

Facing Kong who was waiting, Arthit, who wasn’t ready, had to find a topic to stammer and ask the other person.

Arthit said: “Um…are you ok?” Arthit asked a stupid question but at that moment he couldn’t think of any other topic to start a conversation with another person. The listener, however, just nodded and answered briefly.

Kongpop said: “Well…”

Arthit said: “Um…and today’s wedding ceremony was so beautiful, don’t you think so too?”

Kongpop said: “Well…”

Arthit said: “But… The theme of today’s wedding is red. Red shirts are hard to find, aren’t they? I only found one red tie.”

Ha ha! Arthit laughed so awkwardly. The situation made him uncomfortable, so he quickly stopped laughing.  Arthit’s unnatural reaction made the person who was watching him sigh a little….

Kongpop said: “Phii Arthit, I know you’re uncomfortable talking like this and if you’re forcing yourself, then you don’t need to talk to me.” After Kongpop said that, Arthit raised his head. He saw Kong’s eyes, just like before, looking straight at him without dodging. It was the first time he saw clearly the emotion in Kong’s eyes which was not indifference but a look of deep fatigue, dissatisfaction and deep pain.

It was like Kong’s voice, soft as a murmur but powerful.

Kongpop said: “Because the more you do that, the more you seem to be giving me hope…”

Kongpop said that and turned around and left. At that moment, Arthit didn’t say anything to stop him…it wasn’t that he didn’t want to but he just didn’t have any proper reason to stay. Because now he realized in his heart that he wasn’t the only one who felt the same way Kong did too and they were each uncomfortable, tortured and in pain… in such an ambiguous atmosphere.

Nott said: “Hey, Arthit!”

No’s voice comes over, urging the absent-minded man to enter the wedding venue. Kong had already left, leaving him to quietly follow his friend into the venue. They sat at a large round Chinese table near the stage, which belonged to their group. All kinds of food was served. Soon after, the ceremony really started with a sweet video of the bride and groom on the big screen. Then, the bride and groom walked slowly through the front doors to the stage. Both parents brought a wreath of jasmine flowers to wish them a long and fruitful marriage. The host then started a chat about their romance by saying: weren’t you two friends before?

Tum said: “I was the head hazer and Fon was the head nurse at the time. My scolding was so harsh that many of my juniors fainted. Fon always scolded me for not pretending to be harsh because the nurses wouldn’t be able to take care of them. If it got worse, Fon would report it to the headmaster. Think about it. Volunteering to be a nurse but selling official secrets. I didn’t want that either, so we argued about it.”

There are plenty of people who can confirm the story from senior Tum’s mouth. Especially Arthit, who was a freshman and senior Tum was the head hazer of that year. He remembered very well that Tum was really good at scolding but the reasons why the juniors and seniors fainted were often mixed. Because not only did they get a good rest but they could also take this opportunity to be taken care of by the beautiful Nurse Fon.

Tum said: “But that’s it, they don’t know what to do in the end. By the time I realized it, we couldn’t be apart.” Afterwards, the groom clasped the bride’s hand.

The crowd cheered for the couple, as today they would take a step forward from being friends to being lovers and spouses and the broken relationship between Arthit and Kong was completely different. Arthit looked at the pictures on the stage and thought to himself that he is a third year senior and Kong is a first year and that they are both boys. Although he wanted to go back to the atmosphere of talking to Kong, to the relationship with his older brother but once it happened it was hard to go back and maybe it was already too late.

Trying to shake off his anxiety, he adjusted his mood and brought his heart back to the wedding, ready to stand up and raise his glass. He thought to himself that he had prepared a gift for senior Tum, which he was going to give him at the end of the wedding. The wedding was a lively and joyous affair and it ended just before nine o’clock. Most of the guests had already returned, except for a group of engineering students who were preparing to leave. They went outside the arch to look for the bride and groom who were standing there to see them off but they saw only the beautiful bride – alone, no sign of the groom.  Arthit went over and asked.

Arthit said: “Fon, where did Phii Tum ho?”

Tum said: “Oh, to the bathroom.”

Fortunately, the bathroom is not far from the wedding venue. He went over to the senior and to his surprise, he saw that the senior had just finished washing his hands. As soon as the seniors saw Arthit, they greeted him. Tum said: “Ow, warm… Tum said: “Ow, warm…

Arthit said: “Phii, I have something for you.”

Arthit said as he handed over the pink envelope. Tum was puzzled that although it was wrapped in an envelope and had to be opened, there was nothing inside but a beautiful card with blessings and words of thanks for your care.

Tum said: “Thank you but I didn’t expect you to send me a card. The groom was joking because he knew Arthit not very well but he knew that this gift was completely out of character for Arthit.

Arthit was quick to admit that…

Arthit said: “I don’t know what to send but I was told that a card would be romantic.”

Tum said: “Ha, romantic! Who was the girl who told you that? Since when did you secretly have someone like that…You’ve grown up!”

Arthit said: “No, I don’t know what’s going on between me and this person right now.” The tone of this sentence is extremely sad and frustrating. Tum just noticed that Arthit was not in a relationship and seemed to be having serious problems and was hiding something. But before he could ask the question, he was the first to ask it…

Arthit said: “Phii, I want to ask you something. When you were with Fon, were you happy?”

Tum said: “Ow! Of course! Why do you ask that?”

Arthit said: “I have heard that when we meet the right person, we feel very happy, very blissful. But if we feel uncomfortable and miserable when we are with the other person, it means that he/she is not the right person. Isn’t that right, Phii?”

After listening to Arthit’s thoughts, Tum began to understand what was happening. He sighed deeply, ready to talk to Arthit seriously, just like he had taught him how to be a head hazer before. But this time he was teaching the other one about life experience.

Tum said: “Ooun…you listen to me very carefully. I don’t just feel happy when I’m with Fon. I also fought a lot with Fon and it was painful. Believe it or not… This morning we had a fight about the wedding cake. When I started dating Fon, I said goodbye to the past and became easily irritable, angry, happy and sad. I know I’ll be like that in the future but I still choose to be with her. Do you know why?”

Arthit shook his head. Tum smiled a little and then answered in a way that touched someone’s heart. Tum said: “Because I’ve never felt this way with anyone before, only Fon can make me feel like a different person. That person can change everything for you. With that person looking out for you, you’ll feel good. When that person is around, you feel warm. When that person becomes cold, you feel uncomfortable. And when you think of losing that person, you weep.”

For him, the answer was obvious. Kong was the one who fitsa all these parameters and although he heard the reason, there was still some confusion that he had to ask. [Sighs]

Arthit said: “But… But… how can Phii be sure? If my relationship with this person becomes different, what should I do?”

Tum said: “Is your relationship with this person the same now?”

After Tum said that, Arthit was silent. Because he knows that their relationship is not the same as it was before, especially after seeing what happened between the two of them after meeting Kong today. Obviously, even if he tried a lot to go back to the past, it’s impossible for their relationship to return to the old atmosphere, as senior… Tum explained next. Tum said: “Ooun, when people start to feel something, it’s hard to go back. The only way is to let time wash away everything. But do you let time pass by without doing anything? Or do you take the time to do the things you want to do with each other? You go back and think about it. I need to go see the guests off. Good luck to you!”

Tum tapped Arthit on the shoulder and was about to walk out of the bathroom. But before he could leave, he was stopped again.

Arthit said: “Wait, Phii.”

Tum said: “What now?” The groom, who had been called, turned around and began to get impatient with all the doubts of his classmates. Although he was in a hurry to see the guests off, he stopped and stood there to listen to the third question.

Arthit said: “I’m not sure what I feel for this person.’

Tum said: “Ask me? How do I know what you want? But don’t think with your head, think with your heart. If you can’t think of anything, just let it go! Think of something and do it! You are the big man, be brave and don’t be a wimp when you are already a head hazer!”

Tum’s words reminded Arthit of his role as the head of the hazing team. The groom went out of the washroom and left Arthit standing silently in the silence that he heard echoing inside him. Clenching his fists, Arthit quickly walked out of the bathroom and saw his friends standing together in a pile. Prem saw Arthit and was the first one to call out to him.

Prem said: “Hey, Arthit where have you been? We are going back, waiting for you all alone.

Arthit said: “Where is the first year?”

Prem said: “What first year?” Prem heard the question and frowned. He was confused and immediately looked at his friend. But Nott, who was standing next to him, seemed to have guessed who Arthit was talking about, so he became the one to answer

Nott said: “If he you are talking about Kongpop, he had just left, probably waiting for a bus in front of the hotel.”

Arthit said: “Ok, thanks Arthit said briefly and was ready to run off in that direction by himself. Prem couldn’t piece together what happened before and after and had to ask again. Prem said: “Ow. Well, do you want to come back with us?”

Arthit said: “You guys go back first, I’ll go back alone.”

Arthit replied loudly as he left, not caring at all about the friends he left behind. For all he had to do now was to run. Then he arrived in time and from this moment on he had decided that he would choose to follow his heart.
